Beginning Knit

Beginning Crochet

Lucky YOU!!! Great Yarns has changed our format for our Beginning classes to make them more supportive, reinforcing, and inspiring in the long run. For both Knitting and Crocheting the first class will cover the basics and have you leaving with basic stitches and a sampler dishcloth or hot pad to do as your homework.

In the second class, we'll discuss challenges from the first week, how to fix them, and get you set with a pattern and knowledge to make a WEARABLE cowl for you or a friend!!
Individual instruction also available; please call the shop at 919 832-3599 to schedule.

 Knitting Classes:
Single 2-hour classes, $30
Thursdays, September 12th, October 10th, November 14th, 4:00-6:00PM with Barbara
Learn what to do when you make a mistake in your knitting! Barbara will help you not to panic, get “un-stuck,” and consider your options moving forward. Skills covered: making repairs, ripping out and picking up stitches, and “fudging it.” 
Saturday, September 21st or Wednesday, November 6th, 3:00-5:30PM with Beth, $30
Always wanted to try another way of knitting? Beth will teach you how! Please note that this is NOT a beginner class, but is designed for those who are already “throwers.....”
A single three-session class, $50
Wednesdays, October 16th, 23rd, and 30th, 3:00 - 5:30PM with Beth
Tired of Second-Sock Syndrome? This sock class will provide you with the techniques you need for knitting two at once using Magic Loop. Yay for You!!!

 

 Love Notes Sweater

A Single three-session class, $50

Fridays, September 20th, 27th, and October 4th, 2:00–4:00PM

A little bit of lace, a little bit of mohair, top-down construction and a cropped fit make this the ideal layering piece for fall! This sweater comes in sizes from 0 – 6 months to XL adult, so you can make one for a little loved one or for yourself!!! Join the fun for Early Intermediate knitters who have made a garment, but would like to learn more about reading charts, mixing fibers, and lace.

Growler Cozy

A single two-session class, $40, with Barbara

Sundays, September 15th and 29nd, 2:00-4:00PM

Just in time for football season!!! Join us as we stitch up a unique present for your favorite beer drinker that's sure to make him or her smile! Pam saw this in a shop in Montana, and was convinced that we need to knit them up in school or team colors!!! Given the subject, all participants are welcome to bring a beverage of their choice....maybe from the shop around the corner? For advanced beginners...bulky yarn means it will knit up fast in the round!

 

Cables and Fingerless Gloves

Two-session classes, $40, with Beth

Sundays, September 15th and 22nd, 4:00-5:30PM

Students will first make a wash cloth with several types of cables following a chart to practice this skill. Students will then cast on for the fingerless gloves. Prerequisites: increase and decrease, knit in the round. Skills you will learn: a variety of cables, reading charts
A single three-session class, $50 with Beth
Sundays, September 22nd, October 13th and 20th, 4:00-5:30PM

Students stitching up these beautiful mitts will learn to: knit with two colors while working in the round, read charts, do an i-cord cast-on, and knit a lining. Prerequisites: increase and decreases, knitting in the round.

Saturdays, October 5th and 12th, 4:00-5:30PM

No better time to start preparing for Christmas with a personalized stocking.  Students will learn to follow a striped pattern and finish with applying a double stitched name on the stocking. 

My First Hat

A single Two-session class, $40 with Pam

Mondays,October 7th and 14th, 10:00–11:30AM

For Beginning Knitters who have finished their first project or two!! Learn how to knit in the round and use double-pointed needles (DPNs), while producing a super-cute hat to wear or give! 'Tis almost the season....

Men's Sweater KAL

Starts Friday, October 18th, 4:00PM, $10

Yes....more stitches, but YOU CAN DO IT!!!! Come join us as we knit up this distinguished sweater just in time for the holidays!!! A wonderful project, either as a gift for your favorite man or for yourself...

Fallow Cowl

A single two-session class, $40 with Beth

Sundays, November 3rd and 10th, 4:00PM

The Fallow Cowl is an ideal gift that drapes around the shoulders providing soft warmth! The cable pattern is deceptively simple, with directions both charted and written out; you'll have the 12-row repeat memorized in no time! 

My First Baby Sweater

A single two-session class, $40 with Pat

Tuesdays October 22 and 29, 5:00-6:30PM

If you've mastered basic K and P stitches, made a hat and/or scarf or two, and want to try your first garment, it's sometimes best to start small! Join Pat as she teaches you the ins and outs of top-down construction, increases and decreases, using DPNs to work in the round, and buttonholes...all while knitting up a darling baby sweater!

 

A single two-session class, $40 with Lisa
Tuesdays, November 12th and 19th, 6:00-8:00PM
Try your hand at the -oh-so-stylish Brioche Stitch while making this bright and cheerful cowl with Lisa! Students will learn the basics of two color brioche in a chunky weight that knits up quickly. Great for gifts!

 

Crochet Classes:

My First Hat

One session three hour workshop
Tuesday, October 8th, 5:00-8:00PM, $50 with Lisa

Learn freeform techniques or further your freeform skills in this 3 hours workshop with Lisa. Prerequisite skills: students must have basic knitting (knit, purl) and crochet (chain, single crochet, half double crochet, double crochet) skills.
